Motorist flees police near Ponoka, escapes on foot

While attempting a traffic stop police say the driver sped off before hitting the ditch

A motorist who failed to stop for police escaped on foot after crashing into the ditch.

While on patrol Tuesday night at about 10:30 p.m. Ponoka RCMP attempted to pull a silver Pontiac sedan over on Highway 2A south of town. While attempting to make the traffic stop the vehicle sped off.

It was found a short time later in the ditch on Highway 2A near Secondary Highway 604 close to the homes in Morning Meadows. Police found a man in the vehicle, however, he fled the scene on foot. In an effort to locate the man Ponoka RCMP and Wetaskiwin police dog services searched the area.

Residents in Morning Meadows were advised to stay indoors while police conducted their search. Police were unable to locate the suspect and the matter is still under investigation.

Witnesses said it was a few hours before the scene was cleared.
