Healthy Living Expo promotes sustainable, innovative and healthy lifestyles

The Healthy Living Expo took place Saturday at Westerner Park.

The annual high-energy Expo showcases exhibitors, demonstrators and sponsors all promoting a sustainable, innovative and healthy lifestyle.

Sky Morgan with Wild Brewing Co. was handing out cups of kombucha, a fermented, carbonated tea known for containing probiotics and a hint of alcohol. He said kombucha is one of the latest natural health and wellness-oriented products on the market.

“It’s full of probiotics, B vitamins and enzymes that help the digestive system,” he said. “Over the past few years, it has been on the rise as the hip new thing.”

Kombucha is made by combining steeped organic black and green tea, dissolved organic cane sugar and a bacterial culture called SCOBY, or Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast, he said.

While it is left to ferment, the sugars and caffeine are broken down. It is flavoured with organic fruit juices.

“It will help boost your immune system,” he said. “For me, it helped get rid of heartburn. If you overeat, it will help with that bloated tummy feeling.”
