The Red Deer Renegades Soccer Club is seeing the results of talented players, excellent coaching and a keen sense of competitiveness.
Club president Paul Morigeau said players are moving up to play on university teams and some have also been selected for provincial teams.
He is especially proud of the Red Deer Renegades U18 team which won Provincial Tier 2 in Calgary Aug. 15 to 17.
“Winning gold in Provincials was a good sign we are going in the right direction with the teams.”
He noted Dallas Hughes, Greg Redekop, Aazan Ramji and Malcolm Martinez were key players in the tournament.
Hughes and Redekop scored three goals each and Ramji scored two.
Hughes was also selected for the U16 Team Alberta Boys 2008 team which won a bronze medal at the tournament held in Ontario.
Malcolm Martinez, who made the winning goal in Provincials, was selected for the Team Alberta U15 Boys team in 2007. Brad Hughes, another Renegade player was also selected for the Team Alberta U17 Team last year.
Other Renegade players that have excelled this summer include Heather Young and Sarah Paschinski who were both selected for the Team Alberta U15 Girls 2008 team which placed third overall at the Schwann USA Cup held in Blaine, Minnesota in July.
During the tournament Young was twice named most valuable player and Paschinski was named once.
In the quarter finals Young scored the only goal and her team won in a shoot out. The Alberta team was defeated in the semi finals.
The Schwann USA Cup is a prestigious tournament in which teams from all over the world participate.
This summer also saw Red Deer Renegade Caitlyn Lomsnes as the only Alberta player selected for Team Western Canada who competed in the Danone Cup U12 Girls held in Toronto in July. The team won silver in the tournament losing in the final game to Team Ontario 1-0.
Red Deer Renegades graduates Heather Lund and Anna Grobler have been selected for the University of Alberta Pandas Soccer Team.
Ashley MacWhirter is playing soccer at the University of Alabama.
Morigeau is pleased to see players from the Renegades advance and move on. He noted the club, which was started three years ago, has expanded to include 15 teams ranging in age from U10 to U18. He said the club has allowed players who wish to be more competitive do so without having to go elsewhere to play.
“Before the more competitive kids had left town to play, but now they have a chance to play here competitively.”
He said playing in the Edmonton Interdistrict Youth Soccer Association means the Renegades have had to work hard, but players and coaches have risen to the challenge. He noted the Red Deer teams finished the season in the middle of the league.
“That’s pretty good. It’s tough competition. If you play down you can win all your games, but this league is very competitive.”
