BRYAN FISCHER

Being a newspaper carrier for the Red Deer Express, who was willing to go above and beyond the duties expected of him, has paid off in a big way for a local teen.
Bryan Fischer, who racked up 26,741 points to win the Express’s Carrier of the Year contest has received a $5,000 travel brochure and $5,000 cash.
The 17-year-old was thrilled with his awards which were presented to him last Saturday at a party recognizing International Carrier Day.
“My jaw just dropped, I was so nervous and shocked. I never expected to win,” he said.
Fischer, a Gr. 12 student at Notre Dame High School, plans to save the $5,000 for his post secondary education.
He will use the travel brochure to help pay for a trip to Hawaii with his mom, Jessica, his sisters, Christine, 20, Michelle, 14 and Carissa, 11.
Express publisher Graham Schofield said Fischer deserved to win the contest.
“We’re really impressed with what he accomplished. He had taken on a number of routes, substitute and regular, and went far above and beyond what a typical carrier is responsible for. He is the ideal newspaper carrier and the prizes couldn’t have gone to a better guy.”
Fischer delivered six regular and four substitute routes this summer. He also delivered extra Sears catalogues whenever possible.
He worked from noon until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and from noon until 5 p.m. on Thursdays to complete the routes.
Now that he is back at school and working part time at Subway, he has given up four of his routes.
While he is thrilled with the prizes, he said delivering papers has its own rewards.
“I enjoy the exercise, the solitude. I put on my headphones and listen to music and enjoy the scenery, it’s peaceful.”
Express circulation manager Bob Grainger said Fischer demonstrated commitment and responsibility with his newspaper routes.
“Obviously he is a hard and conscientious worker.”
