Both the Red Deer Public and Red Deer Catholic School Boards are looking forward to a successful year as kids went back to school yesterday.
“We are optimistic it’s going to be another good year for Red Deer Public Schools,” said Bill Stuebing, chair of the board. “We have a full agenda this year.”
Stuebing said the public board will look at doing some development of existing facilities, building a new school in Aspen Ridge, working on the development of a substance abuse intervention program and looking at developing a district wide literacy program, among others.
“Another important initiative we’ll be looking at will be to ensure students graduate high school and are able to make the transition to some sort of post secondary education,” said Stuebing.
Over 1,000 staff in the Red Deer Public School District will be working on all the initiatives the board will bring forward.
Meanwhile, Red Deer Catholic School Board Chair Christine Moore said it’s a big year for their division as they celebrate their 100th anniversary.
“We will be celebrating 100 years of having Catholic education in the Red Deer area,” she said. “It’s a very big milestone and it’s something we’re very excited about.”
She added the division is developing a promotional video in honour of the 100th anniversary.
Other projects the division will also start on include construction on the Holy Trinity Catholic School in Olds.
A new transportation facility for the division’s busses will also be up and running on the south end of Red Deer.
“We’ll have our own engineers and mechanics working out of the facility,” said Moore.
Another major project facing the district is the renovation of St. Thomas Aquinas School.
“That is going to be a total revamp,” said Moore.
She added the board is looking forward to another year.
