You can find inspiration in Fall colours

09/03/08
There is a certain feeling in the air this time of year; it is hard to describe and is sort of bitter sweet.
Fall is a wonderful time of the year and I find it to be the mark for renewal rather than January.
I love shopping for school supplies and seeing what colours are in style for the year. Who doesn’t remember getting new clothes and shoes for fall?
Fall brings so many rich earthy colours for us to bring into our home design; it can be a very inspiring time for decorating!
I meet so many people who struggle with ‘where to start’. This seems to be a major stumbling block for people - they get halted before they begin!
I encourage you to go out and find inspiration this week, find something new and special to put into your home.
Inspiration can be found in a myriad of places from nature to store window displays.
I recently went to purchase some make up at my favourite counter (which is now open in Red Deer!) and I was inspired by the fabulous array of colours displayed. I could have found a paint colour or drapery fabric inspiration in any one of those beautiful black pots.
Take some time to visit show homes, take pictures and take notes! Find something in each home which inspires you and gives you inspiration for your space.
It may be a dramatic wall colour, an inspirational piece of art or a gorgeous rich tone in a leather couch. If you do not have show homes in your area, arrange a coffee party with friends and neighbours and go from house to house - you may find some inspiration in the design ideas of your group.
If you have the added pressure of a group of your peers coming to your house you may find the inspiration you need to embellish your home just from the anticipation of their visit.
Sight is the main sense we employ when designing homes but I encourage you to engage other senses when decorating.
I was in a client’s house last week and went into her recently decorated TV room with her new leather furniture. The room’s atmosphere enveloped me by smell even before I could take in the beautiful colours of the room.
The leather had a rich, musky aroma to it (which happens to be one of my favourite scents on earth) and the smell of the room was relaxing and comforting which melded perfectly with the warm wall colour and new flooring. The room was inviting to sight and scent which is a wonderful combination.
A favourite scent, a winning colour, a touchable fabric all ignite the senses and give us inspiration for decoration.
Give yourself a day to just browse, smell candles and touch new materials you may not have had time to notice before in your busy day.
Take a walk in a park when the leaves start to turn colour. Notice the shades of fall as it gets ready to rest for the winter and observe the colour that nature uses to wrap itself.
You may come across an unexpected treasure in your adventure which will be the perfect inspiration for your design project.
