The newsroom at the Red Deer Express is dedicated to you the reader.
We consider it our duty to bring Express readers the most up to date news, information, sports and entertainment in the community along with a package of reading which includes medical advice, personal advice, auto features, travel features and much more.
The Express is unique in that it is a weekly newspaper in a city of 80,000 which also has a daily paper.
The challenge for the newsroom is to ensure the news package in the Express is up to date, new and has not been carried in any other media in town.
Its to that end our newsroom works. Quarterbacked by Sean McCann, an editor of more than 30 years journalistic experience (26 of which were spent with daily newspapers at Sun Media), the newsroom has a mixture of young and experienced staff all highly qualified to bring you the news and pictures that matter most to you.
Johnnie Bachusky has been around newspapers for 25 years and brings a wealth of experience to the newsroom as he monitors the police and court beats and writes a highly informative local column. Johnnie also looks after the Business section of the paper.
Mark Weber is easily the most recognized and praised entertainment writer in Central Alberta. In addition Mark writes on various other topics including medicine.
Erin Fawcett expertly covers the municipal political beats as well as education and general stories.
Photographer Chad Hipolito is a professional. This is Chads first venture into newspaper photography and we know he will be great.
Our newsroom staff also works to bring you in-depth features on various topics of concern, as well as bright photo essay pages.
In addition to these staff writers we have a stable of freelance writers bringing you national (Allan Fotheringham), travel, medical, auto, advice stories and columns.
One of our most popular is city archivist Michael Dawe who each week brings the history of Red Deer to life in his column.
Over the years the Express has won numerous awards at the national and provincial levels. The paper continues to win awards and thats great, it means our peers recognize our excellence.
But the greatest award the newsroom can have is that you the reader recognize the excellence and professionalism we dedicate to bringing you the best.
We in the newsroom are always accessible. And we encourage you to contact us, whether it be to tip us off on a news happening or to criticize us for something you may not like, or alternately to tell us you think were doing the right job.
