Jacki Warrener is only 13 but already she has achieved national recognition and her athletic endeavours are being sponsored by a leading brand name clothing company.
Warrener from Sylvan Lake, a member of the Central Alberta Freestyle Ski Team, is sponsored by ROXY.
Warrener, a vivacious teen, who loves freestyle skiing, became a member of the ski team when she was only 11, after participating in ‘jumps and bumps,’ a program for younger skiers.
“I liked it a lot. It was lots of fun,” she said.
Since being on the ski team she has won several gold medals and last January she took gold in Table Top (big air) freestyle skiing at the Alberta Winter Games held in Leduc.
Last season she was the junior national champion in big air at a national competition held in Quebec at LeRelais ski resort.
And this summer, when Warrener was at a ski camp in Whistler, she was approached to represent ROXY, a well known clothing line.
“I was so excited,” she said. “I just have to represent their brand and promote ROXY positively.”
Coach Jeremy Batchelor, who began working with Warrener in June, sees her at the top of the podium again this year.
“She’s super confident, she’s not afraid to try new things and she has no problem going high in the air,” he said.
Batchelor said the young athlete has been learning new tricks all summer.
Warrener said she is looking forward to the new season.
“I think it will be an amazing season. I’ve worked really hard and I hope to get a lot of new tricks at the competitive level. And I hope to return to the junior nationals.
“And in the next few years I hope to compete in the U.S. open and X-games.”
