Waste Management Facility wins award

12/24/08

The City of Red Deer received an Alberta Recycling Collection Site Excellence Award for exceeding the requirements established by the Alberta Recycling Management Authority.

The City of Red Deer won the category for municipalities with a population over 25,000.

“We are very proud to be the first recipient of this award. We work hard to make sure our landfill is run in the most efficient, environmentally responsible manner possible,” said Jeff Miller, Environmental Planning Superintendant. “Providing a safe, accessible site for citizens to recycle items such as paint, electronics and tires is just one more way we can encourage people to keep these things out of our landfill.”

Items such as scrap metal, propane tanks, furniture and cardboard are also diverted for recycling at the Waste Management Facility.

“We are always looking for ways to divert other recyclables from our landfill. Right now we are researching options to recycle toilets and drywall.”

Information on recycling programs is available online at www.reddeer.ca or by calling the Blue Line at 403-340-2583.

United Way needs more support

United Way of Central Alberta is inching closer to its $2 million goal.

To date the agency has received $1,704,484, representing 85% of its goal.

United Way campaign chair Darcy Mykytyshyn urges all Central Albertans to reach deep into their pockets to help United Way reach the community objective.

“There is little doubt that this year will go down in the history books as being wildly unpredictable, yet our goal at United Way remains the same – we simply have to support our community and fellow citizens, because it is the right thing to do,” he said.

“If everyone helps, we will achieve our goal.”

Call 403-343-3900 to make a credit card donation, or stop by the office at 4811 – 48th St. The office will be reopening on the 29th until Dec. 31st.

All donations postmarked by Dec. 31 will be eligible for a charitable donation in 2008.

Outdoor rinks opening soon

The ice surfaces at Bower Ponds, Anders on the Lake pond, and Westlake pond are open for skating in the evening.

Ice rinks with a community association attached to them, including the Speed Skating Oval are open as well.

All other community skating rinks will open once the community association rinks are up and running.

Hockey sticks and pucks are not permitted on Bower Ponds, Anders on the Lake, Westlake or the Family Skating Oval.

The public are also asked to limit the use of pucks and sticks to neighbourhood rinks with boards.

The City of Red Deer maintains 67 ice surfaces in various locations throughout the city.
