Santa needs your floats

11/12/08

The call is out for more floats to be entered in next week’s Santa Claus Parade.

After being cancelled last year, the event is back in business Nov. 18.

So far, about 13 floats have been entered in the parade by local businesses and organizations, but organizers would like to see between 15 and 20.

“We’d like it to be as big as possible,” said Charles Strachey, chair of the Biggest Christmas Tree Festival.

Those interested in having a float in the parade are asked to submit their entries by this Friday, he said.

Strachey also noted that as the parade is at night, Christmas lights will be used to light up floats so they will be relatively simple to put together and still look bright, colourful and festive.

The parade will play an important role in the annual Biggest Christmas Tree Festival, which is kicking off the holiday season in Red Deer along with the hugely popular Festival of Trees, scheduled from Nov. 21 to 23.

The parade begins at 5:30 p.m. and will last 30 to 45 minutes as it travels down Ross St.

The Red Deer Biggest Christmas Tree Festival will also feature the lighting of Red Deer’s Biggest Christmas Tree along with the lighting of the Christmas lights in City Hall Park.

Organizations interested in the parade—which is free to enter—or people who want to volunteer can go to www.reddeerfestivaloftrees.ca.

For information about parade entries specifically, call Lindsay Hutton at 403-304-4761.
