Local fans of country crooner Jaydee Bixby will soon have another chance to hear the Canadian Idol runner-up.
Bixby continues to charm listeners and attract new fans with his debut disc Cowboys and Cadillacs.
He plays the Memorial Centre Jan. 18. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with showtime at 7:30 p.m.
Cowboys and Cadillacs, replete with explosive country tunes with robust, rocky edges, hit shelves back in early July.
The disc gives Bixby much to work with onstage, from the infectious first single Old Fashioned Girl to Love Is, which lands him firmly back into rollicking country-rock territory.
Momentum is building thanks to the disc which reached number one in Canada and the response to the slate of new tunes.
He’s still as passionate as ever about performing live, pointing out how much versatility a stage offers in terms of tweaking a song.
He also credits his band with the fresh blast of creativity.
Bixby is originally from Drumheller, and his family moved to Red Deer a couple of years back.
Speaking of family, music has always been at the forefront.
Along with his parents, he performs as part of the Bixby family band.
His own love of music was sparked as a youngster.
He recalls being about five or six-years-old and singing for a multitude of folks during a festival.
Even then, he was struck by the enthusiastic response of the crowd.
Performing has been a natural thing ever since, and he’s always been drawn to classic country sounds.
The decidedly non-technical aspects of the genre are what he finds particularly attractive.
His stint on Canadian Idol, which unfolded during the summer of 2007, brought unbelievable opportunities to Bixby and his fellow contenders, including mentoring from American Idol superstar Kelly Clarkson, Enrique Iglesias and Canada’s own master of the standards Paul Anka.
Fans can currently enjoy his Christmas single called 21st Century Christmas.
Shortly into the new year, he heads to Nashville for a few months to focus on songwriting for his next project.
