CITY PULSE Story:  2
Calgary blues trio plays the Vat

11/12/08

Calgary’s bluessmyth will be serving up their usual searing brand of blues at The Vat Nov. 14-15.

Local fans will notice a new drummer – Celene Yohemas, says Chris Yaholkoski (lead guitar, harmonica, lead vocals).

“She’s fantastic, and definitely brings a new dynamic to the band.”

Rounding out the group is Jason Yaholkoski (bass, backing vocals).

The band exudes a confident, explosive and sophisticated sound.

Listeners were first introduced to their mesmerizing and powerful merging of musical talents with their debut 30 Pieces of Silver was released in 2004.

An exemplary self-titled follow-up was unveiled in 2006.

Both discs showcase a band committed to crafting some of the finest blues around these days – gritty, authentic, polished but exuding ‘live-off-the-floor’ sensibilities.

Chris said the band is now gearing up to record project number three in January, with a March release.

He describes the next slate of songs as being more “rhythmic” in nature than the former outings.

More insightful and poignant tunes are promised, including a couple inspired by the Hurricane Katrina disaster, he said.

The new disc will be recorded in just two weeks. While some bands take months to put together a disc, Chris said the tight-timelines can ultimately be a plus.

“It’s better not to extend the deadlines — we can feed off the pure energy of the project.”

The moniker bluessmyth is based on a good-luck myth of a blacksmith so accomplished in his trade the devil pays a visit.

Showing up as a goat, he asks the blacksmith to make him shoes for his hoofs.

The final product is a tad too tight — giving constant pain to the devil. They also serve as a reminder to the evil one to steer clear.

Looking ahead, this hard-working band is looking to expand their horizons as the new year unfolds. They’re looking to snap up some festival dates and even plan a few stops south of the border and in Europe.

Chris said based on the response of folks so far to the new music, the excitement is building.

“The feedback has been tremendous.”
