Top Three Canadian Idols coming to town

11/12/08
Canadian Idol’s top three singers from last season make a city stop Nov. 30 at the Memorial Centre.
Featuring the winner Theo Tams, the show will also showcase Mitch MacDonald and Drew Wright.
Each artist will have the chance to belt out their favourite tunes performed on the last season of Idol.
Showtime is 7 p.m.
Tams, who hails from Lethbridge, came to Toronto’s Top 200 audition earlier this year and was blown away by the talent surrounding him.
“I remember being speechless during the Toronto week, wondering how the judges were going to find a Top 22 from all this talent,” says the 22-year-old student.
Ultimately, he successfully carved out his own niche amongst the competitors and fans latched onto his vision.
“You make your own way as an artist. You need to discover your own path in the industry,” he says. “The competition has made me much more aware of who I am as an artist.”
Besides his passion for music, he’s also keen on lending a helping hand internationally.
Tams has spent time volunteering at an orphanage in India and considers it to be his biggest accomplishment in life.
Tams found his niche by bringing a unique, self-assured performance style to the table which has always been supported by his friends and family. He wields a tremendous vocal talent beyond his years as well, which no doubt fueled his ride to the top of the Idol heap (witness the power of his first single Sing).
His versatility is also remarkable, and stems in part from his current studies and intrinsic tastes in music.
A university student working towards a double major in psychology and classical music, Tam’s vocal training has been in opera but his musical tastes cross all genres - from Bob Marley to Lauryn Hill and Damien Rice.
“When I perform, I am giving 100 per cent of myself and what I stand for as an artist.”
He also describes his personal style as a bit of a mash-up.
“If a preppy guy and a hippie got into a fight - I would be wearing the clothes that got ripped off.”
Meanwhile, Idol runner-up MacDonald hails from the town of Port Hood in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
He’s the youngest of seven kids, and loves hockey, songwriting and playing guitar.
“Being a full-time musician involves a lot of hard work,” he says.
Wright is also thrilled to be onboard the national Idol tour.
The Collingwood, Ontario native has earned an honours diploma in music production and engineering.
“I am going to give people the best that I can give each night,” he said.
“I won’t hold anything back and I think that’s what’s moved people so far,” he explains.
“Why change?”
