EVENTS
The Senior Citizens Downtown House has pot luck suppers the first Friday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $5. 403-346-4043. Wednesday night dances at 7:30 p.m. Cost $6.

Old-time dances run at the Red Deer Legion every Wednesday evening. Smorg at 5 p.m. with dance at 7:30 p.m. Cover charge $6. Country music runs Friday and Saturday evenings 7 to 11 p.m. 342-0035.

Central Pairs and Squares – try square dancing this fall. Regular dances at the Downtown House the second and fourth Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Squares are 8 to 10 p.m. 403-347-6183.

Lacombe Round Dance Club — beginners lessons run 7 to 8 p.m. and experienced dancers 8 to 10 p.m. at St. Andrews United Church. 403-782-4094.

Bower’s Little Stars family play program runs the second Wednesday of the month in the food court at Bower Mall from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Presented by Family Services of Central Alberta, the event also offers coffee and children’s snacks.

Central Alberta Dancer’s Society Dances are held the fourth Friday of each month at the Penhold Memorial Hall, regular dances start at 8 p.m. $10 at the door. Liberty Christian Assembly is having a Christmas Eve service at 6:30 p.m. everyone is welcome. 403-342-7800.

The Family of Faith Church invites you to join us for a Fun Family event Dec. 31 with comedy improv team Theater Off the Cuff. Beginning at 8 p.m. and ending at midnight, join us for music, drama, coffee, snacks and lots of laughter! There is no charge and everyone is welcome. A New Year’s Eve dance runs at the Red Deer Elks Lodge (Taylor Dr. and Horn St.) with music by Wise Choice. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dance at 7:30 p.m. and lunch at 10 p.m. Cost $15 per person. 403-347-3180 or 403-346-3632.

Are you a parent wondering what to do with the kids for New Years Eve? The Kerry Wood Nature Centre is running a sleepover program for children, 7–10 years-old. Participants will explore the Sanctuary at night, follow animal tracks through the woods, play games, eat snacks and do a craft. We’ll have the best view in town as we ring in the New Year on the East Lake viewing deck then lead a sparkler parade back to the Nature Centre. We’ll put a movie on the big screen in the theatre as kids roll out their sleeping bags. Nature Centre interpreters will provide a full evening of care and nature-based entertainment. Parents can drop their kids off at 6 p.m. and pick them up at 9 a.m.; after the kids have a breakfast of fruit, muffins and juice. The cost for this unique evening is $55 per child. The 21st annual Reindeer Fun Run is held Jan. 1 from Clearview Community Centre (on Cornett Dr.) at 10 a.m. Entry is $5 with a donation to the Red Deer Food Bank. Proceeds to Red Deer Food Bank. Snack and refreshments included. (403) 346-7437.

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Red Deer Jan. 8-9. This annual fundraiser for the Kerry Wood Nature Centre features the best mountain-themed sport, nature, adventure and culture films from around the world shown at the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival. Revenues from this event support ongoing environmental education and sustainability projects at the Nature Centre and benefit the community at large. Tickets are $16 each per night or $30 each for both nights. Tickets can be purchased at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre or Valhalla Pure Outfitters. 403-346-2010 or email programs@waskasoopark.ca.
