SPORTS Story:  3
Pro lacrosse game a big hit with fans

12/17/08

There may be more interest in lacrosse in Red Deer next season after fans had a chance to watch the pros in action at the Centrium last Saturday.

Kevin Graham, president of the Central Alberta Lacrosse League, said about 3,000 fans gathered at the Centrium to watch an exhibition game between the Edmonton Rush and the Calgary Roughnecks from the National Lacrosse League.

The Battle of Alberta proved to be an exciting, intense game with lots of fast paced action.

Graham noted that while the score was 10 – 5 for the Calgary Roughnecks, the tally was closer than the tally indicated.

“It was a very fast and hard hitting game,” he said. “Fans could certainly see the rivalry between the two cities.”

He said the game provided some great action and gave fans an opportunity to see lacrosse played at a professional level.

“We certainly achieved our goal to raise awareness of the game,” he said.

He noted lacrosse, which is considered Canada’s national summer sport, requires finesse and skill and is exciting to watch.

Any proceeds from the game will go to the Central Alberta Lacrosse League.

Red Deer is one of 10 communities in Central Alberta that is part of the league. Other communities include Hobbema, Ponoka, Lacombe, Blackfalds, Innisfail, Kneehill County, Olds, Didsbury and Drumheller.

More than 1,200 players take part in the league which runs from the beginning of April to the end of June.

League play begins at age four and continues to the midget level.

Although the regular season only runs from April to June, winter lacrosse is available for players who wish to participate in the game all year. Practices are held weekly at the Collicutt Centre.

Lacrosse is a full contact team sport played using a solid rubber ball and a lacrosse stick.

The object of the game is to use the lacrosse stick to catch, carry and pass the ball and ultimately score in the opponent’s net.
