Young rebels goalie ready for the road

11/05/08

Red Deer Rebels goalie Darcy Kuemper has one road trip win under his belt and is pumped for the next away win, which could happen tonight against the Spokane Chiefs.

Kuemper said he is ‘excited’ about the road trip.

“I feel good,” he said. “I’m ready to go.”

Kuemper was in net when the Rebels were 5-4 shootout winners over the Regina Pats last Friday in Regina. The win marked the first victory for the Rebels on the road.

“I had six shooters on me and I didn’t let in any goals,” he said. “It was good. And the win was good for us. It gave us confidence and showed we can do it on the road.”

The Rebels didn’t fare so well, Saturday, losing to Prince Albert Raiders 2-1.

Coach Jesse Wallin said the Rebels were focused, but just couldn’t find the extra gear they needed to win the game.

“There was too much time and space and they scored on a tic-tac-toe play,” he said. “It cost us the hockey game.”

Morgan Clark was in net for the Rebels against Prince Albert.

“I’m pleased with both goalies. They’ve given us a chance in every game. Kemps is pushing Clark for ice time, but they’re both doing good.”

Kuemper, 18, appeared matter of fact and non emotional as he faced the media after the Rebels lost 3-2 to Kootney Ice.

“It’s frustrating and I’m really disappointed,” he said. “But I felt confident out there.’’

The 6’4’ goaltender came to the Rebels from the Spokane Chiefs last December in return for a seventh-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft.

Wearing a Rebels jersey and playing in the Western Hockey League is a privilege for Kuemper.

“I’ve been playing since I was four,” he said. “I don’t get nervous out there. But playing (in the WHL) is definitely a step up. I just have to keep playing at the top of my game.”

Experiencing his first shut out against Moose Jaw Warriors at home on Oct. 25 when the Rebels beat them 6-0 was an awesome experience, he said.

“It did give me extra confidence, but I just have to keep working hard.”

The Saskatoon native was selected to the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League all-star team when he played Midget hockey.

The Rebels play the Portland Winter Hawks on Saturday and take on the Tri-City Americans Sunday.

Next Tuesday they play Prince George Cougars. Their next home game is Nov. 15 against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
