Committees reinstated

12/17/08

Two advisory committees that were axed by Red Deer city council in 2006 have been reinstated.

A new Crime Prevention Advisory Committee and Environmental Advisory Committee will be formed.

Each committee will include seven members, up to five of which will have some sort of past experience in either the environment or crime prevention.

The purpose of the Crime Prevention Advisory Committee will be to create a greater sense of individual, neighbourhood and community safety and security; to enhance citizen engagement through greater participation in crime prevention; and to enhance public confidence in the city and their approach to crime prevention.

The purpose of the Environmental Advisory Committee will be to recognize the importance of the environmental issues that council and the community share; to enhance citizen engagement and decision making on environmental issues; and to enhance council confidence in establishing environmental priorities and their impact on a vibrant, healthy and sustainable Red Deer.

Councillor Gail Parks voted against the reinstatement of the committees because she thought having a police advisory committee would not be effective.

“With either a commission or a police committee, you have stability and oversight and you have a public complaints director – both of those committees fall under the Police Act,” she said. “The advisory committee does not and so we’re missing that aspect in the City of Red Deer.”

Parks added she hopes the committee will bring more to the community.

“I’m open minded that this committee will take us in a good direction, but I guess if I look at the provincial requirements that if you form a committee then there are responsibilities that you have – with that they fall under the Act then and we don’t do that,” said Parks.

In a vote of 8-1, council agreed to reinstate the committees.

Parks voted against the reinstatement.
